EMF stands for electromagnetic field, the field produced by any electrical device including a sauna heater. Infrared sauna makers advertise low-EMF or near-zero-EMF designs, usually meaning shielded or paired heating elements that cancel part of the field. There is no industry standard defining either term, and measured figures at a stated distance are rarely published.
Why it matters when you are comparing products
Because the terms are unregulated, low-EMF and near-zero-EMF claims are not comparable between brands. Treat them as design descriptions rather than measurements unless a maker publishes a figure and the distance it was measured at.
Where this comes up
- Infrared saunas — Most cabins here carry an EMF claim of some kind.
